Drawing on Eve

Article by: Cailee Wilbur
Appeared in: The Comets Tale, Volume 32, Issue 7, February 4, 2000

"Drugs have taught a whole generation of Americans the metric system," is a popular saying on one Grand Ledge band's t-shirts. "Drawing on Eve," said James Kruth, "at one time meant something deep, but now it just means four friends who make music together."

Jake Weirich, senior, and Adam Kruth, junior, his brother James and Ryan Smith who are both graduates from Grand Ledge High School are the artists that make up the band.

Their musical style can be described as...well it really can't be described according to the band "Our style ranges so drastically that it can't be categorized except by class," said Weirich. Musical inspirations include Paul McCartney, Chad Sexton, Chad Smith, John Densmore, Dave Matthews Band, 311, Ben Folds Five, and Phish. "Not only the people is my band, but also the local band, I don't think of them as competition, but as allies," added Adam Kruth.

"Many things inspire me to make music. My life, the guys in my band, good music. Realtionships, fights, conflicts, funny things, girls...basically anything that happens to me," said James Kruth.

For Weirich it's, "The fact that I can sit around with three other really talented people and make the most beautiful sounds that anyone has ever heard."

Brothers, Adam and James Kruth, have different ideas about whether or not music comes easy to them. Adam said, "If it didn't I wouldn't do it, I'm the laziest person around."

James Kruth, on the other hand said, "It depends on my mood. Most times making music is the easy part. It's writing the music that's hard. I love to make and write music. It's the best feeling to write a new song and play a song really well."

Writing well goes along with thier accomplishments. They have also reased an album "The Passionate Intesity of Life" which Weirich and Adam Kruth have made available to purchase for $10.00 at GLHS. According to Weirich their accomplishments also include, "Becoming friends as well as a group." They have also met 311, Ben Folds Five and Bloodhound Gang.

James Kruth's advice for people thinking about starting a band is, "Practice, practice, practice!!! Always practice as much as you can. To be succesful you have to be able to play your set in your sleep, while blindfolded."

If you'd like to see these guys in actions, they hope to "gig" around town quite a bit (Small Planet, Silver Dollar, Orbit Room, etc.).
